Diane Klare, Candidate for President-Elect

Candidate Statement

I am honored to be running as a candidate for ACRL/NEC vice-president/president-elect this year. Since joining the Chapter as a brand new librarian in 2002, I have served in various capacities to further our Chapter’s mission and have worked alongside amazingly talented and accomplished colleagues. Librarianship is a giving profession, and I have appreciated the opportunity to give back, since I have also benefited greatly from the outstanding professional development opportunities offered by our Chapter.

Providing such opportunities in fiscally constrained times presents interesting but not insurmountable challenges. During my four years as Chapter treasurer, I spearheaded the move to standard accounting software, established sound budgeting practices, and instituted a strategic planning process to ensure that Chapter funds were used wisely to fund diverse programming in a sustainable manner. My current position as one of the co-chairs of the Leadership Development Committee has allowed me to continue that work to ensure we continue to develop the library leaders of tomorrow in a dynamically changing profession through relevant and meaningful programming on a local level at a reasonable cost.

As president, it would be my goal to make sure we consistently reach out to the academic library community and graduate students throughout New England in Chapter activities. We need to make sure we are engaging new members in a reciprocal and inclusive manner to spur intellectual stimulation, out-of-the-box thinking, and the generation of new and innovative ideas. Focusing on diverse membership is the key to having a thriving chapter that is fully engaged in the role libraries play in higher education today as well as into the future.
