Access Services Group Walter Stine, Co-Chair The Access Services Interest Group held two public programs during the 2003-2004 academic year. Our fall meeting on November 13, 2003, was called "Musical Chairs: What's your Hot Topic this Semester?" This program was designed to allow Access Services staff to meet for a day of open discussion on key topics they are facing. The topics included issues such as Staff and Student Training, Copyright, E-Reserves, ILL and Document Delivery, Distance Learners, and Systems. Participants met around tables with a moderator and recorder for each topic. The combined results of the discussions were later posted on the ASIG website. To encourage broad participation across New England, ASIG held this meeting at two locations on the same day: Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Each location drew upwards of 50 individuals. Due to the success and popularity of this meeting, we are planning on a similar format for fall of 2004. Our annual spring meeting will take place on May 20, 2004, at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts. This program, "Access Services: New Demands, New Services, and New Technologies," will be moderated by Nancy Sartanowicz of Workplace Strategies. We are expecting a good turnout to discuss such topics as the combined Circulation and Reference Desk, Assessment, and Core Competencies for Access Services staff. Nancy Sartanowicz will deliver a keynote address that will help participants understand behavioral style and its impact on our interactions in the workplace. Finally, the co-chairs for 2004-2005 will be Gail Geisser of Rhode Island
School of Design and Walter Stine of Northeastern University. See the ASIG web site for more details of interest group activities. |
