Continuing Education Committee Offers Resource Web Page and Conference Programs

Judith Pinnolis, Committee Chair
Brandeis University

As we strive to integrate rapidly evolving tools and meet ever-expanding user expectations in our daily jobs, skill-building becomes a necessity. But where can library workers find the training we need? The ACRL/NEC website now includes a page dedicated to continuing education resources. The page includes relevant ACRL sponsored websites, events and conferences, and "Help from ALA" with the Knowledge and Learning brochure containing programs, books and training opportunities. ALA also has an Office of Human Development Resources and Recruitment which facilitates the development of librarianship as a profession.

If you are more inclined towards formal courses, the new CEC page also lists library schools that offer a wide variety of distance learning programs. These have been pulled from the ALA database of accredited library schools with, '100% online courses'; those schools that offer 'Primarily online with some face to face classes'; those schools found to offer 'Primarily face to face with select online courses'; and those that offer 'Satellite or other broadcast methods.' This will provide a shortcut aid to New England librarians in making decisions about starting an online course with a distance education component.

CEC is sponsoring a program at the Mass. Library Association this coming May and Colleen Andersen will be speaking on the theme: "Continuity and Change: Training for Management."

For the ACRL/NEC annual meeting program in May at Rivier College, the Continuing Education Committee has lined up a speaker for the breakout session. Michele V. Cloonan, Dean and Professor at the Graduate School of Library & Information Science, Simmons College will lead a breakout session on "hot skills."
