Information Technology Interest Group Report

Melissa Behney, Connecticut College
ITIG Chair

The ACRL/NEC's Information Technology Interest Group (ITIG) has had a busy year. Three programs have been held and another is planned for June 2nd. ITIG will also sponsor a breakout session on interactive tutorials and streaming videos at the ACRL New England Spring Conference. Sue McMullen, Roger Williams University, and Frances Schlesinger, UMass Boston, (co-chairs elect) planned the breakout session, and Sue will serve as moderator. ITIG was represented by Melissa Behney (chair), Connecticut College, and Linda Plunket (steering committee member), Boston University, at the ACRL/NEC Midwinter Dessert Social. An ITIG brochure was created for this event and used subsequently to publicize ITIG activities.

This year, ITIG has partnered with a number of other SIGs to co-sponsor programs for ACRL/NEC members. NELIG (New England Library Instruction Group) invited ITIG to join them for a November program. This program combined the teaching expertise of ACRL Immersion Program alums with a presentation about the Learning Objects/Learning Activities (LOLA) collaborative database for sharing information literacy teaching resources. The February program on federated searching was a huge success with over 90 participants. Clearly, this is a topic that people are thinking about. In March, ITIG partnered with the Preservation and Conservation Interest Group (P/CIG) to host a program on institutional digital repositories. A June 2nd program on journal archiving in the electronic environment is being co-sponsored by the Serials Librarians Interest Group (SLIG). Program reports and a number of speaker presentations are available from the ITIG web site.

Bridget Rawding (secretary), Merrimack College, and Janice Schuster (chair elect for 2005-06), Providence College, provided the written reports on ITIG meetings. Sara Amato (treasurer), Bowdoin College, handled registrations for the February program. Melissa Wisner, UConn, has taken over as moderator of the ITIG electronic mailing list while Heidi Abbey is on leave. Olga Verbeek (past chair), Salve Regina University, continues to serve as ITIG webmaster. In addition to this core group, Nancy George (past chair ITIG and ACRL/NEC Vice President), Salem State College, and Christine Turner (ACRL/NEC Communications Co-Coordinator), UMass Amherst, Julie Linden, Yale University, and Mary Piorun, UMass Medical School, have been very active in program planning with with the ITIG steering committee. Laura Haines, University of Vermont, and Linda Plunket, Boston University, and Mary Piorun have joined the steering committee.
