New England Library Instruction Group Report Sandra Rothenberg, Framingham State College NELIG met on December 2, 2005 at Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, New Hampshire. The meeting was a great success with over 50 attendees (more than the expected amount) from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Vermont. The meeting focused on the topic of “The 50 Minute, “One Shot” Library Instruction Session: What to do?” There were two presentations and discussion. Sara Marks from Fitchburg State College discussed how she refocused library instruction at her institution by emphasizing the importance of critically evaluating Web Sites on the free Internet. Christine Drew from Worcester Polytechnic Institute discussed motivational strategies, student assignments, and teaching outcomes. She actively engaged participants to share their teaching philosophies by writing them down on post-its and some discussion followed about this as well. The NELIG Conference Planning and Steering Committees met after the official meeting. The NELIG Spring Meeting will be held on March 17, 2006 at The University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester as a joint meeting with ITIG. Presentations will focus on Google’s impact on library instruction and technology. NELIG’s Annual Program will be held at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island on June 9, 2006. The theme of the NELIG annual meeting was discussed at the conference planning committee meeting on January 6, 2006. The title of the conference will be: “Information Literacy: Beyond the Diploma.” The conference will cover the topic of information literacy in various library environments as well as in relation various stages of learning. (Like what information literacy skills do college students need for the real world of work? What information literacy skills do high school students need for college?) We plan to have a morning panel of 3-4 guest speakers to discuss these issues and will send out a call for proposals for afternoon presentations. |
