LOCI Program on Blackboard and WebCT Merger

Jim Kinnie, LOCI Co-chair
Assistant Professor/Humanities
Reference Librarian
University of Rhode Island

LOCI held its spring meeting on February 24 at Tisch Library, Tufts University. Our guest was Joe Barrow, Regional Sales Manager for Blackboard, who discussed some of the implications surrounding the merger of Blackboard and WebCT. There were 17 people in attendance including administrators, a library school student and many types of librarians in between.

The meeting was informal and informative and since the merger is brand new, Joe could only give his informed opinion about the future of the ‘new’ company. For now, Bb and WebCT will continue to offer and support their products. Sometime in the future (perhaps 3-5 years) there will probably be a single product. In the meantime, WebCT Campus Edition and Vista will still be offered and Bb will continue to develop Building Blocks and relationships with partners, make campus integration easier, and work toward creating the single product which will keep the Blackboard brand.

For current information on the merger, go to http://www.blackboard.com/webct
