Beginnings, Endings and What Happens In Between

We all have birthdays, “New Years” and personal anniversaries that mark time and transitions for us, don’t we? Some are more significant than others, but for me they prompt reflection and goal setting. Each spring I have a sense of renewal as the green returns and the students leave campus. Now I can take a little time to breathe, and then launch into those projects. That’s the feeling anyway.

The Annual Conference on April 21st marked the end of my term as Vice President. I felt satisfaction and relief that the conference planning phase of my responsibilities was complete. Now I’m looking forward with new excitement. How do I want to lead our Chapter for the next year? Colleen Anderson and Nancy George, my predecessors, were truly admirable role models. They each identified areas towards which to direct their energies, in the process strengthening the Chapter’s framework.

I see the purposes of stewardship and nurturing clearly before me. As I’ve worked with the Board over the past several years, I’ve developed a deep respect for the dedication, creativity and knowledge of my library colleagues. My most basic goal for the coming year is to facilitate the work of those who decide to contribute to ACRL/New England Chapter, because I’ve seen repeatedly what our peers can do when “let loose”. At the retreat at Gordon College on June 5th, I’ll explore areas on which to focus with other members of the Board.

ACRL/NEC has in place a structure that feeds new and experienced professionals alike with 8 (interest groups) dedicated to specific expertise or functions, as well as (continuing education), legislative action and other evolving working groups. As one academic year draws to a close, naturally to be followed by the beginning of a new one, what do you have to give to, and receive from, librarianship? I invite you to get involved in ACRL/NEC for professional development and service. Join an interest group, a planning committee or an ad hoc working group. When next spring comes around, give yourself the opportunity to reflect positively on your contributions to our profession.
