NELIG Report and Announcements

Kendall Hobbs, Wesleyan University

Co-Chairs, New England Library Instruction Group

NELIG’s annual program last year took place on June 9 at Roger Williams University, on the topic of "Information Literacy Beyond the Diploma." A panel of guest speakers, which included a former attorney general of Rhode Island, joined us in the morning to address the importance of lifelong learning and the role librarians play in preparing students for life after graduation. The afternoon featured sessions on some of the practical aspects of teaching skills for lifelong learning. Many thanks are due to Angie Locknar and Jennifer Hanson and their program committee for their work in organizing the conference, as well as to Barbara Kenney for hosting us at RWU.

Our first NELIG meeting for 06/07 took place at Salem State College and featured Nancy Dennis and Nancy George of Salem State informing us of their experiences "Teaching Information Technologies to Faculty at Salem State College Library." After the presentation, question and answer session, and an open discussion of library instruction issues, a few of us remained behind to begin planning for this year’s annual program. Assumption College has volunteered to host, and we agreed on "assessment" as the theme.

The next NELIG meeting is set for December 8, to be hosted at Rennselaer at Hartford, but this time with a twist: we will be testing the Elluminate software to have a meeting with several locations. Cecilia Dalzell at Rennselaer has volunteered to coordinate using the software at several locations, which include Bowdoin, St. Joseph's in Maine, Keene State, Springfield College, and Providence College. As for the content of the meeting, Emily Chasse, Susan Slaga, and Libby Knapik will talk about their experiences converting for-credit information literacy courses to an online format.
