ACRL/NEC Board Minutes Summary:
Meeting of May 17, 2002

Judy Montgomery
Bowdoin College

President Dawn Thistle welcomed new and outgoing officers and SIG chairs to this transitional meeting. Dawn described the highlights of her presidency:

  • Changes to Bylaws to facilitate Chapter incorporation and completion of process to obtain tax exemption status.
  • Changes to By-laws to approve email voting on By-law changes.
  • By-law changes for email elections. Dawn mentioned that the numbers of voters was not as high as she would have liked and did not show an increase over past elections held with print ballots. The process went very smoothly. The Chapter should revisit the issue after next year’s elections.
  • Procurement of liability insurance for Board members.
  • Archive moved from Colby to Bryant College.
  • Sue Lieberthal became chair of Continuing Education. She reviews the committee’s charge, and stimulates Board discussion on the role of the committee to insure its vitality.
  • Fall conference and spring business meeting. Dawn especially thanked Helena for her hard work on pulling together these events.
  • Increase in SIG budget allocations.
  • Appointment of a new Webmaster. Dawn will write to Maryann Hight thanking her for her important contributions while in this position.

Dawn gave special thanks to Helena Rodrigues, incoming President, for her work on the programs and to Harvey Varnet, Past President, who she described as "the go to guy".

Helena discussed her work planning last year’s fall conference held November 9, 2001 at UMass, Boston and the Chapter’s business meeting held on April 19, 2002. She especially thanked Dawn and Harvey for their support throughout her term as Vice-President/President Elect. Helena noted her excitement at getting started with her presidency.

Treasurer, Marilyn Steinburg distributed two reports: 1) Chapter financial information; 2) SIG balances and expenditures. The current balance is $9,340.05 in the checking account and $6,000 in CDs.

Helena Rodrigues announced that the Chapter would be co-sponsoring the 5th Annual community Forum on Historical Records scheduled for June 7, 2002, "Documenting Underdocumented Populations and Communities".

Sarah Wenzel reminded Board members that 2002 is the 30th Anniversary of the Chapter. The Board decided to provide a special membership rate of $30 for five years.
