President’s Letter: A Harvest of Activities

Helena Rodrigues,
Johnson & Wales University

What an exciting time it is for ACRL/NEC librarians! The academic year is well underway and our Special Interest Groups have been very busy planning, scheduling and hosting a bounty of programs for our membership.

This week, for example, I attended a program entitled, Advances in Library Services and Techniques for managing change, an all day meeting sponsored by the Continuing Education Committee, Information Technology Interest Group (ITIG) and the Access Services Interest Group (ASIG). It was held on Monday, November 4, 2002, at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. My sincere congratulations go to Susan Lieberthal, Chair of the Continuing Education Committee, for developing the idea of combining SIGs to offer innovative and creative programming. Over 60 librarians attended this event and listened to such topics as: virtual reference, access services, statistics, system migration and project management.

Other scheduled programs include the MIT Preservation and Conservation Open House on Thursday, November 21, sponsored by the Preservation and Conservation Interest Group (PCIG), and a December 5th workshop, Interdisciplinary Studies: creating collections in a multi-subject environment…” at the Tisch Library, Tufts University, sponsored by the Collection Development Interest Group (CDIG).

These activities will keep our Chapter busy through the Holidays as we fulfill the objectives of ACRL/NEC, “to provide opportunities for the professional growth of academic and research librarians by conducting workshops and arranging programs in the various areas of the region; to encourage the exchange of ideas and information relating to library development; to disseminate educational information oriented to academic and research libraries; and to support and participate in programs of other regional and local organizations in New England when appropriate in order to promote and improve library services to the academic and research community.”

I wish everyone a joyous holiday season and a very prosperous new year.
