Annual Report

2006-2007
NELIG sponsored three meetings and one conference this year.

We opened our year with a meeting on Sept 15 at Salem State College. Nancy George and Nancy Dennis hosted and presented at the meeting, which had 28 attendees. Their presentation, “Teaching Information Technologies to Faculty at Salem State College Library,” outlined their experiences teaching online search skills to faculty through a number of campus-wide initiatives since 2004.

At the next meeting, on Dec 12, we tested the Elluminate virtual conferencing software as a means of having a meeting with multiple locations. This software allows multiple sites to link to the host location with audio and projector feeds, as well as chat-based communication, on a real-time basis. Rensselaer at Hartford served as the base location, thanks to Cecilia Dalzell who was in charge of the technical arrangements. The program featured Susan Slaga and Emily Chasse from Central CT State U and Libby Knapik from Sacred Heart presenting on how they developed and taught online for-credit information literacy classes.

A total of 69 people attended one of 5 locations -- in addition to Rensselaer at Hartford, there were groups of varying sizes at Providence College, Bowdoin College, Springfield College, and Keene State College. That was the largest attendance for a regular NELIG meeting. According to evaluations after the program, Elluminate is not as good as being there but it worked very well as a substitute for either not being at the presentation or having to drive several hours to get there. Though it worked quite well for the presentation and q&a, there was no open general discussion as we usually have after a presentation and it was only marginally useful for the business meeting to plan the annual program. If we use it in the future (and it looks worth using for at least one meeting a year), we could plan to have a few strategically located venues and thus more likely have a critical mass at each individual location for each place to have its own open discussion after the presentation. A designated local host and discussion leader would also help. In addition, it would be better for the planning committee for the annual program to agree to meet at one location.

Our third meeting was on March 13 at Wentworth Institute of Technology. Kari Mofford hosted 22 attendees who saw Kari along with Carolyn White and Susanne Paterson from UNH-Manchester, Marilyn Steinberg from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, and Susan Herzog and Meredith James from Eastern CT State U talking about their experiences in “Collaboration @ Your Library: Getting Our Message Heard Outside the Library World.”

NELIG’s Annual Program 2007 at Assumption College was on “Demystifying Assessment: Evaluating Student Learning.” 130 people heard Megan Oakleaf, Assistant Professor from the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, talk about assessing student learning, then attended various afternoon sessions featuring discussions about experiences with assessment by Joanna Burkhardt, Amanda Izenstark, and Peter Larsen (University of Rhode Island); Mott Linn (Clark University) and Rukmal Harvey (Salem State College); Sandra Rothenberg (Framingham State College); and Carr Ross, Elizabeth Reilly, and Judy Montgomery (Bowdoin College). Many thanks are due to all the folks who helped put on the show, especially program co-chairs Matt Sylvain (UMass Dartmouth) and Jennifer Hanson (Primary Source), and Carole Myles who hosted us at Assumption.

At the annual program, Angie Locknar (MIT) and Laura Hanlan (WPI) were announced as NELIG’s new co-chairs-elect for 2007/2008, and Diane Klare will once again be NELIG’s secretary.

Minutes of meetings and PowerPoints, handouts, and other presentation information is available at the NELIG web site at http://www.wesleyan.edu/libr/nelig/.

Respectfully submitted,
