ACRL/New England Chapter
Women's Studies Interest Group
Annual Report
2001-2002

The Women's Studies Interest Group scheduled two programs during the 2001-2002 fiscal year.

Unheard Voices (Baker Library), Harvard Business School, Spangler Center, September 28, 2001.

On September 28th, 2001 the Women's Studies and Business Librarians' Interest Groups welcomed forty-five attendees to their joint program on the Women in Business Project held at Harvard Business School's Spangler Center. Under the stewardship of Laura Linard, Director of Baker Library's Historical Collections and the leadership of Clara Bouricius, Project Manager of the Women in Business Survey, working women's voices from the 18th-20th centuries are beginning to resonate from Baker Library's Historical Collections through the pages of the "Unheard Voices" web site. Clara Bouricius and Project Staff presented a fascinating overview of the women's history materials in the Baker Library's business manuscript collections and the challenges inherent in locating, organizing and providing access to these important archival collections.

Maine Women Writers Collection, University of New England, Westbrook Campus, Portland, Maine, May 20, 2002.

On May 20, 2002, the Women's Studies Interest Group will be making a return visit to the Maine Women Writer's Collection at the University of New England, Westbrook Campus, in Portland, Maine. We last visited there in June of 1997. We will be welcomed by Cally Gurley, Archivist of the Maine Women Writers Collection, who will give us an overview of the collection and a tour of the recently renovated facility. We will also have a presentation by Professor Jennifer Tuttle, the Dorothy M. Healy Professor of Literature and Health at the University of New England. Professor Tuttle is also the editor of the forthcoming edition of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's novel, The Crux.

"The Maine Women Writers Collection, Abplanalp Library, Westbrook College Campus of the University of New England, is a pre-eminent special collection of published and non-published literary, cultural and social history sources, by and about women authors, either native or residents of Maine. The collection also includes correspondence, photographs, personal papers, manuscripts, typescripts, artifacts, and audiorecordings that provide insight into the lives and writing of both well-known and obscure Maine women authors."

Future Plans:

At our May 20 meeting we plan to hold a brief business meeting to talk about the future of the Women's Studies Interest Group. Sarah Mitchell will step down as co-chair effective with the May 20th meeting. Chris Smith, who has been the ongoing Chair of the WSIG since 1996, is also ready to move on providing a replacement Chair is available to assume her responsibilities. A preliminary call for volunteers has gone unanswered.
